HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-15-20 - MinutesMINUTES OF THE DOWNEY YOUTH COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING October 15, 2020 Thursday, October 15, 2020 – 4:00 pm Downey City Hall – City Manager Conference Room 11111 Brookshire Ave. Downey, CA 90241 The Downey Youth Commission held a Regular Meeting on September 17, 2020 at 4:08 p.m., in the Downey City Hall – City Manager Conference Room, 11111 Brookshire Avenue, Downey, California. PRESENT: Commissioner Gonzalez, Sofia Commissioner Carrillo, Jaylean Commissioner Hernandez, Liliana Commissioner Jimenez-Jones, Jynx Commissioner Jones, Jocelyn Commissioner Kozhaya, Nicolas Commissioner Lomeli, Kimberly Commissioner McDaniel, Nicholas Commissioner Mongan, Nathaniel Commissioner Nevarez, Andrew Commissioner Olivares, Kimberly Commissioner Serrano, Zayanna ABSENT Commissioner Iniguez, Andrew Commissioner Kozhaya, Andrew Commissioner Montanez, Jasmine Also present, staff liaison Vaniah De Rojas. Public Works Principal Engineer Desi Gutierrez also attended the meeting. I. DOWNEY YOUTH COMMISSION ANNOUNCEMENTS None. II. AGENDA AND NON-AGENDA PUBLIC COMMENT No Speakers III. DOWNEY YOUTH COMMISSION ELECTION Commissioner Nevarez was elected as Chairperson and Commissioner Carrillo as Secretary, as there were no other nominations for those positions. Commissioner Mongan and Commissioner Serrano were nominated for the position of Vice-Chair. Commissioners voted and Commissioner Mongan was selected. IV. CIVIC GOVERNMENT EDUCATION Staff Liaison Vaniah De Rojas reviewed the City of Downey Organizational Chart. Public Works Principal Engineer Desi Gutierrez provided an oral presentation on the Public Works Department and various projects occurring throughout the City V. LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT Staff Liaison Vaniah De Rojas reviewed upcoming City Council meetings and volunteers opportunities. Commissioner Mongan shared comments from the last City Council meeting he attended. Various Commissioners showed interest in the Halloween activities being organized by the City’s Parks and Recreation Department. VI. YOUTH ISSUES/COUNCIL PRIORITIES Commissioners shared an idea for Mental Health Event and 5K event. Another Commissioner mentioned utilizing the high school Link Crew. VII. STAFF COMMUNICATION The Youth Commissioners were reminded to follow on Instagram – Downey.yc, pick up Commission shirts, and to utilize Groupme. VIII. ADJOURNMENT  The meeting was adjourned at 4:40 p.m.
