The Downey Youth Commission is entering its loth year and appointments are needed for the
new school year.
City staff had originally planned a marketing campaign consisting of school visits, videos in
school morning announcements, and social media posts. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-115'
health crisis, the City was only able to use social media. City staff posted the Downey Youth
Commission openings through the City of Downey, The Downey Patriot and Downey Unified
School District social media platforms.
Despite limited recruitment efforts, the City was able to increase its application pool by more
than double when compared to the prior year. A total of 36 applications were received for 11
vacancies.
Each Youth Commissioner entering grades 9-11 shall serve a two-year term and may be
reappointed for up to one term of two years provided they continue to meet the eligibility
requirements. Youth Commissioners in grade 12 are limited to a one-year term.
