The Downey Youth Commission held a Regular Meeting on January 16, 2020 at
4:04 p.m., in the Downey City Hall — City Manager Conference Room, 11111
Brookshire Avenue, Downey, California.

Commissioner Nevarez, Andrew

Also present, Maria Rivas Management Analyst and staff liaison Vaniah De
Rojas by conference call.
Mayor Pacheco also attended the meeting.
I. DOWNEY YOUTH COMMISSION MEMBER ANNOUNCEMENTS
• None
II. AGENDA AND NON -AGENDA PUBLIC COMMENT
• No Speakers
• Commissioner Vera motioned and Commissioner Mongan seconded to
approve the minutes of the December 19, 2019 meetings. There were no
objections.
IV. CIVIC GOVERNMENT EDUCATION
• Captain Orloff provided a presentation regarding the Fire Department
and Corporal Runyan provided a presentation regarding the Police
Department.
Chairperson Zepeda discussed pervious and upcoming City Council
meetings and volunteer opportunities. Chairperson Zepeda
encouraged Commissioners to attend City Council meetings.
Mayor Pacheco invited the Commissioners to do the Pledge of Alliance
at an upcoming City Council meeting.
Commissioners signed up for the TLC 5K event.
VI. YOUTH ISSUES/COUNCIL PRIORITIES
Staff Liaison Vaniah De Rojas discussed upcoming projects:
o Civic Engagement
■ Pre -Register to Vote Event
■ Mock Census
■ Student Government Day
o Youth Engagement
■ Instagram Photo Contest
o Inclusivity
■ Circe of Friends — Adaptive program
o Mental Health and Wellness
■ Mental Health Event/Program
■ TLC Partnership Event — Pent to Heart Project
o Sustainability
■ Tree -Planting during One Day of Service
Various Commissioners provided updates from their subcommittee
meetings.
VII. STAFF COMMUNICATION
Staff Liaison De Rojas discussed the use of another communication
system besides email to communicate with the Commissioners. Ms.
De Rojas also provided City pins and copies of the Commissioner's
Oath of Office to those who missed last meeting.
