The goals of the Downey Youth Commission are: • Leadership development • Civic/local government education (including planning Student Government Day) • Provide input to the City Council regarding youth issues Completion of annual assignments/priorities from the City Council The Downey Youth Commission (Commission) held their first meeting of the term on October 17, 2019. Since October, the Commission has volunteered 70 hours at various City events, including the City's Pumpkin Patch, One Day of Service, Tree Lighting, and Home Decorating Contest. Additionally, Commission members have attended City Council meetings to become more familiar with City happenings. While the Commission will continue these aspects of Leadership Development, the Commission identified key Youth Issues it wanted to address this term. Specifically, Civic Engagement, Youth Involvement, Inclusivity, Mental Health & Wellness, and Sustainability. A breakdown below includes the projects the Commission will lead under each area. A presentation will also be given the Commission's Chairperson to further explain each project concept and current status. DOWNEY YOUTH COMMISSION PRIORITIES PAGE 2 a. Civic Engagement i. Tree -Planting - One Day of Service Events Additionally, the Commission has developed an Instagram account to engage the youth and become aware of duties of the Commission and how to join. The Commission will provide a presentation update to the City Council in June of what the • had accomplished in the 19-20 term. There is no fiscal impact associated with this item.
