The Downey City Council approved the formation of the Downey Youth Commission in
June 28, 2011. The goals of the Downey Youth Commission are:
• Leadership development
• Civic/local government education (including planning Student Government Day)
• Provide input to the City Council regarding youth issues
Completion of annual assignments/priorities from the City Council
The Downey Youth Commission (Commission) held their first meeting of the term on
October 17, 2019.
Since October, the Commission has volunteered 70 hours at various City events,
including the City's Pumpkin Patch, One Day of Service, Tree Lighting, and Home
Decorating Contest. Additionally, Commission members have attended City Council
meetings to become more familiar with City happenings.
While the Commission will continue these aspects of Leadership Development, the
Commission identified key Youth Issues it wanted to address this term. Specifically,
Civic Engagement, Youth Involvement, Inclusivity, Mental Health & Wellness, and
Sustainability. A breakdown below includes the projects the Commission will lead under
each area. A presentation will also be given the Commission's Chairperson to further
