That the City Council waive admission fees to the Columbia Memorial Space Center for
all guests the Apollo Lighting Ceremony on Thursd.y, December 5 th from 5-.00pm to
8:00pm.
The mission of the Columbia Memorial Space Center (CMSC) is "to ignite a community
of creative and critical thinkers." Making access to the Space Center as easy as
possible to all the members of the community helps to fulfill that mission and
strengthens the bond between community members and the programs of the Center.
Free admission also encourages the Space Center to become a destination for
community members and exposes a variety of guests of different backgrounds and
ages to the sciences. This is an opportunity for the Space Center to be a destination for
the holiday season.
In order to make the Space Center as accessible as possible to new or returning
members of the community during the event and to introduce as many people as
possible to the exhibits and programs of the Center, staff is recommending that the City
Council approve the waiving of admission fees to the CMSC on Thursday, December 5,
2019 during the hours of 5-OOpm-8:00pm. This unique evening event coincides with the
grand opening of the Space Center's newest temporary exhibition "Aerospace Families
of 1969." Free admission will allow visitors to enjoy a full evening at the Center.

The General Fund may be slightly impacted due to the free admission to the Columbia
Memorial Space Center being offered to all guests, resulting in a possible loss of less
than $500 (assuming a high attendance day), however, the loss of admission fees will
be partially off -set by increased marketing opportunities and any extra ancillary income
from gift store sales or other items due to the expected increased attendance.
