FROM: OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER Y: VANIAH DE ROJAS, ASSISTANT TO THE CITY MANAGER DATE: OCTOBER 8, 2019 SUBJECT: APPOINTMENTS TO THE DOWNEY YOUTH COMMISSION That the City Council approve the appointment of six applicants to the 2019-2020 Downey Youth Commission. The Downey City Council formed the Downey Youth Commission with the goals of: a- Leadership development - Civic/local government education (including planning Youth in Government Day) - Provide input to the City Council regarding youth issues Completion of annual assignments/priorities from the City Council The Downey Youth Commission is entering its 9th year and appointments are needed for the new school year. Of the 14 Youth Commissioners appointed in the 2018-2019 term, four graduated and two were termed out resulting in six vacancies. Each Youth Commissioner entering grades 9-11 shall serve a two-year term and may be reappointed for up to one term of two years provided they continue to meet the eligibility requirements. Youth Commissioners in grade 12 are limited to a one-year term. The Downey Youth Commission will convene on October 17, 2019 for their first meeting of the 2019-2020 term. The City of Downey solicited applications for the Downey Youth Commission through its website, social media, flyers at various locations, and coordinating with high school ASBs and student activities. A total of 14 applications were received. As stated in the Downey Youth Commission Guidelines, each Councilmember with vacancies within their district shall appoint up to three applicants to fill the vacancies. The following are the City Council appointments for the 2019-2020 Downey Youth Commission term: APPOINTMENTS TO THE DOWNEY YOUTH COMMISSION PAGE 2 1. Liliana Hernandez —11th Grade - Warren High School 2. Nicholas Kozhaya — 10th Grade -Loyola High School of Los Angeles 3. Jasmine Montanez — 11th Grade — Warren High School 4. Sade Ned -12th Grade — Downey High School 5. Andrew Nevarez — 11th Grade — Downey High School 6. Paula Zepeda 12th Grade — Ramona Convent Secondary School There is no fiscal impact associated with the recommended action. Youth Commissioners do not receive compensation for volunteering their time to serve on the Downey Youth Commission. Public Engagement
