Young Girls face a unique set of challenges as they enter junior high and high school
relating to stress at school, social interactions and dynamics in their home lives. As
such, these environments have had a profound impact on our youth. In fact, recent
studies show that teens and young adults coming of age today are dealing with more
depression and distress than younger people were a decade ago.
The Girls on Fire program offers a safe space for our young girls to discuss and learn
how to manage these issues by focusing on three pillars: Self Image/Worth, Self -Care,
and Empowerment. The program is a three day, half-day camp that includes a series of
interactive presentations, physical fitness activities, and team building sessions led by
female leaders in the community.
The Girls on Fire Summer Program is scheduled for Monday, July 29 — Wednesday,
July 31, 2019. The program will begin each day at 8:30 a.m. and end by 12:00 p.m. at
the Downey Theatre.
In order to carry out the event, staff is asking for an appropriation of $3,000 to be used
for marketing materials, branding supplies, and equipment for the program. This cost is
based on an estimate of 100 girls in attendance. Staff will also be seeking sponsors to
offset costs as various organizations have already expressed interest in partnering.
