Appropriate Funds for Downey One Day of Service EventIIIL=9Iask, l TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL FROM: OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER BY: JUDDY MONTENEGRO, MANAGEMENT ANALYST DATE: MARCH 12, 2019 SUBJECT: DOWNEY ONE DAY OF SERVICE RECOMMENDATION That the City Council appropriate $8,000 from the General Fund to purchase supplies for the Downey One Day of Service event scheduled for Saturday, April 27, 2019. At the request of Mayor Rodriguez, the City will be holding the first ever"Downey One Day of Service" event. This event will be a community service day in which volunteers will give back to their community by participating in various service projects throughout the City. Examples of service projects may include litter clean-up, reading to seniors, mowing a neighbor's lawn, putting together hygiene kits for the homeless, washing cars for the elderly, among other activities. The goal is for residents and service organizations to take ownership of a specific project and give back to the community. Each volunteer project will have a team captain responsible for recruiting volunteers, securing supplies, coordinating logistics and promoting their specific project. The City will assist in organizing groups and project sites, but it will be up to each team captain and his/her volunteers to carry out their specific service project. Downey One Day of Service is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, 2019. A kick-off rally will take place at 9:00 a.m., in the Breeze Way area of the Civic Center Plaza. Then, from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., volunteers will be dispersed to their volunteer project sites. In order to carry out the event, staff is asking for an appropriation of $8,000 to be used for marketing materials, branding supplies, and equipment for the day of the event. - V e Quality of Life, Neighborhood & Infrastructure Public Engagement DOWNEY ONE DAY OF SERVICE MARCH 12, 2019 PAGE 2 FISCAL IMPACT There are sufficient General funds in account # 10--1230-0140 to cover the $8,000 needed for this event.
