FROM: OFFICE OF
BENJAMIN DICKOW,•MEMORIAL SPACE CENTER
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
SUBJECT: REDUCED ADMISSION TO COLUMBIA MEMORIAL SPACE CENTER
FOR KCET MEMBERS
RECOMMENDATION
That the City Council temporarily reduce fees to a buy one get one free admission offer for
KCET members during September 2018 in order for the Columbia Memorial Space Center to be
selected as the KCET Benefit of the Month organization. This is a continuation of a successful
pilot in 2017.
The mission of the Columbia Memorial Space Center (CMSC) is "to ignite a community of
creative and critical thinkers." Making access to the Space Center as easy as possible to all the
members of the community helps to fulfill that mission and strengthens the bond between
community members and the programs of the Center. The KCET program encourages the
Space Center to become a destination for regional community members and exposes a variety
of guests of different backgrounds and ages to the sciences. The Space Center's participation
in the KCET program will expose the CMSC to a wider audience. As part of the program, the
CMSC will be promoted during on -air broadcasts throughout the year. The CMSC will be
printed on the KCET Directory of Membership Benefits. Additionally, email blasts will be sent to
members during the month of being the featured organization (August and September). The
CMSC will also have placement on the KCET webpage at membercard.com and have
placement on the Member Card mobile app. There are no direct costs that will be incurred to
the CMSC for participation in this program.
In order to make the Space Center as accessible as possible to new or returning members of
the community and to introduce as many people as possible to the exhibits and programs of the
Center, staff is recommending that the City Council approve the reduction of admission fees to
the CMSC specifically during September 2018 for KCET members.

REDUCED ADMISSION TO COLUMBIA MEMORIAL SPACE CENTER
FOR KCET MEMBERS
AUGUST 14, 2018
PAGE 2
The General Fund may be slightly impacted due to the discounted admission to the Columbia
Memorial Space Center being offered to KCIET members, resulting in a possible loss of less
than $500 (assuming a high attendance within the months of August and September), however,
the loss of admission fees will be partially off -set by increased marketing opportunities and any
extra ancillary income from gift store sales or other items due to the expected increased
attendance.
