RIVAS, ADMINISTRATIVE AIDE DATE: JULY 24, 2018 SUBJECT: REQUESTS ON BEHALF OF THE DOWNEY SISTER CITIES ASSOCIATION RECOMMENDATION That the City Council consider a request from the Downey Sister Cities Association for the use of meeting space and city support for Association activities and events. The Downey Sister Cities Association is a non-profit, community organization dedicated to maintaining positive relations with all of Downey's Sister Cities. Over the years, the Association has worked closely with representatives from each Sister City to implement programs that revolve around educational, cultural, and economic exchanges. The City of Downey currently has a total of six (6) Sister City affiliations, which include the cities of Guadalajara, Mexico; Ensenada, Mexico; Fresnillo, Mexico; Valle of San Quintin, Baja California, Mexico; Alajuela, Costa Rica; and Roscommon County, Ireland. The Downey Sister Cities Association has a submitted a Proposal Request (Attachment A) to the City which includes the following: 1. Assign a City liaison to attend monthly Downey Sister Cities meetings (11 per year); 2. Waive fees for the Cormack Room for Downey Sister Cities monthly meetings (January through November); 3. Waive fees for the use of up to 2 City buses for June Concerts in the Park event for a total of 3 hours each; 4. Recognize and introduce visiting Sister Cities during Concerts in the Park held during the month of June; 5. Allow City Hall hours twice a year (June and December) for Downey Sister Cities Association; 6. Recognize and introduce visiting Sister Cities during December's Tree Lighting Ceremony; and 7. Provide assistance with upcoming Ireland delegation in September 2018 with a City tour and tickets for any City sponsored event (i.e., International Food Festival if dates coincide, etc.) during their visit. • SISTER CITIES ASSOCIATION REQUEST AUGUST 14,2018 PAGE 2 City staff is requesting that the City Council review these requests and provide direction.
