Approve Free Admission to CMSC Week of April 2-7 & April 28 for City of Stem FestivalIII I I IVU., F w TO MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL FROM: OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER Y: BENJAMIN DICKO, COLUMBIA MEMORIAL SPACE CENTER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DATE: March 13, 2018 RECOMMENDATION That the City Council waive admission fees to the Columbia Memorial Space Center during the week of April 2nd— 7th, 2018, and April 28, 2018, as part of the City of STEM festival. DISCUSSION The Columbia Memorial Space Center (GMSC) will be hosting a community -focused event called City of STEM Science Festival throughout April 2018. During the month, the Space Center and two dozen partner organizations, will present STEM programming throughout the community of Downey and the greater Los Angeles area, engaging diverse audiences at various locations in the county. This festival celebrates the City of Downey's rich historic association with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) as well as its investment in the future of STEM through its top-notch programs and assets in the city's schools and at the Space Center. The festival is an opportunity to introduce the GMSC to the entire greater LA community it serves in a way that is dynamic and seeks to reach diverse audiences in diverse locations. In order to make the Space Center as accessible as possible to new or returning members of the community and to introduce as many people as possible to the exhibits and programs of the Center, Staff is recommending that the City Council approve the waiving of admission fees to the CMSC from April 2-7, 2018, the week of Spring Break for DUSD students, and on April 28, the culminating celebration day of the entire City of STEM month. Free admission would allow the Space Center to position itself as a destination for students during their break and open access to as many members of the public who want to attend the final event of the month. FISCAL IMPACT The General Fund may be impacted, slightly, due to free admission to the Columbia Memorial Space Center being offered during this week.
