MINUTES OF THE
LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD
OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY
November 17, 2015
The Library Advisory Board held a regular meeting at 6:30 p.m., September 15, 2015 in the Downey City
Library, Cormack Room, 11121 Brookshire Avenue, Downey, California.
Present: Theresa Ford – Vice Chair, Kimberly Hayes, Beverly Mathis, Karol Morrison
Staff and Guests Present: Shannon DeLong – Library Director, Dan Martin-Senior Librarian, Amber
Wysopal – Admin Clerk, Leonor Marroquin for Eunice Hammond, FODCL
Welcome to Members and Guests:
Vice Chair Ford welcomed everyone and called the meeting to order at 6:37 p.m. Roll was called
and a quorum was verified.
Written Communications:
1. The minutes of October 20, 2015 were considered. Chair Ford motioned for approval and Mathis
seconded. By unanimous consensus, the minutes were approved as corrected.
Non-Agenda Public Comment/Oral Communications:
There were none.
Reports:
1. Library Director’s Report: Ms. DeLong reported on the upcoming activities for the Library.
2. Friends of the Downey City Library (FODCL) Report Ms. Leonor Marroquin reported on
upcoming fundraisers to be held at Downey City Library and Knights of Columbus, which are noted
in the Newsletter. Ms. Leonor Marroquin noted the Friends are willing to donate funds to fix the
kitchen and broken fridge in the Cormack Room. It was noted that the Library is waiting on any City
plans before updating the kitchen in the Cormack Room. Also, the upcoming President of the
Friends of the Downey City Library will be Virginia Yoshiyama.
Board Business:
1) Review and Approval of 2016 Holiday Schedule. Vice-Chair Ford seconded the motion, which
passed unanimously as corrected.
2) Review of Library Card Application and Parental Role Policy Mrs. DeLong read the purpose of
the policy as “the policy supports access to library materials for patrons of all ages, urging parents
to become actively involved with the reading and viewing interests of their minor children” Noting
that this is all approved by the ALA.
3) Discussion and Possible Action: Operation of Business in Public Park or Library. After
reviewing the policies, vice chair Ford suggested the policies could cover our needs. It is not too
specific to pertain to the Library and it can apply as an umbrella. Vice-Chair Ford recommended the
policy be approved as-is by council. Karol seconded the motion.
