Item No.
TO: MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
FROM: MAYOR FERNANDO VASQUEZ
DATE: September 23, 2014
SUBJECT: Downey Chamber of Commerce/Living Tree Foundation Fundraiser
RECOMMENDATION
That the City Council approve the donation of two golf foursomes with cart rental at the Rio
Hondo Golf Course in support of the Downey Chamber of Commerce’s 18th Annual “Fun on the
Fairways” Tournament.
DISCUSSION
The Downey Chamber of Commerce has been promoting and supporting Downey businesses
for 114 years. On October 8, 2014 the Chamber will host its 18th Annual “Fun on the Fairways”
golf tournament, benefitting the Chamber’s efforts. This year, the Chamber has partnered with
the Living Tree Foundation to promote an “Operation Hole-in-One” fundraiser which will also
benefit the Foundation’s job training program for local veterans.
In light of the long-standing role the Downey Chamber of Commerce has played in supporting
local business owners and retaining local businesses, and considering the Council’s interest in
supporting local veterans, the Council is asked to consider donating two foursomes of golf.
A round of golf ranges from $20 for Downey resident youth and seniors on weekdays to $59 per
person for tournaments on weekends and holidays. A cart rental ranges from $10-$25 per cart
depending on length of play and number of passengers. The current agreement with the Rio
Hondo Golf Course operator allows the City Council to authorize the City Manager’s approval of
courtesy play and golf cart use when the use benefits the City.
FISCAL IMPACT
The total financial impact of donation of two foursomes of golf with cart use is approximately
$200.
