HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes-08-18-58-Regular Meeting396 MINUTES OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY AND RECREATION AND PARK BOARD HELD AUGUST 18th, 1958 -- The City Council of the City of Downey held an adjourned meeting with the Recreation and Park Board in the Council Chambers of the Downey City Hall at 7:30 P.M., August 18th, 1958. Mayor Temple presided. PRESENT: Councilmen: Stamps, Dunnum, Peavey, Giddings, Temple ABSENT: Councilmen: None ALSO PRESENT: City Manager Oren L. King City Clerk Della Doyle Recreation and Park Board Mrs, Mignon L. Caughran Mrs. Fannie Weiss Reno Sirrine Dewain R. Butler Leon Emerson, Attorney Daniel R. Furman, Director Chairman of the Recreation and Park Board, Mrs. Mignon Caughran, intro- duced Mr. Ray K. Goates as the new Director of Parks and Recreation to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Mr. Daniel R. Furman. Mr. Furman reviewed the 1958 -59 budget of the Downey Recreation and Park District. Mr. Reno Sirrine outlined the plans to establish a sports field on the property owned by the Downey City Schools. He stated that a citizens group had agreed to put in improvements for a baseball diamond for the Little League and the Babe Ruth teams if the Park District would level the ground and install the sprinkler system. After some discussion, it was agreed that there should be a better liason between the City Council and the Park Board. Councilman Giddings moved, Councilman Dunnum seconded, and it was carried by the following vote that the City Council appoint a Park and Recreation Committee consisting of one member appointed by and residing in each of the Councilmanic Districts (5 members), together with the elected Park Board, to create a City Advisory Committee of ten on parks and recreation, 5 AYES: Councilmen: Giddings, Dunnum, Peavey, Stamps, Temple 0 NOES: Councilmen: None 0 ABSENT: Councilmen: None Mr. King introduced Mr. Harold Durham as the new City Associate Civil Engineer in charge of traffic. RESOLUTION NO. WS 93 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY .� ALLOWING CERTAIN CLAIMS AND DEMANDS AND SPECIFYING THE FUNDS OUT OF WHICH THE SAME ARE TO BE PAID. ( #2276 -2277 - $495.00) The resolution was read by title only. It was moved by Councilman Dunnum, seconded by Councilman Giddings, and so ordered that further reading be waived. J811 It was moved by Councilman Peavey, seconded by Councilman Dunnum, and passed by the following vote that Resolution No. WS 93 be adopted: 5 AYES: Councilmen: Stamps, Giddings, Peavey, Dunnum, Temple 0 NOES: Councilmen: None 0 ABSENT: Councilmen: None In answer to the question of Mr. Steve Skinner as to what had been, or could be, done to bring the Parks and Recreation into the City of Downey, Mr. Reno Sirrine explained that it was the hope of the Board that nothing would be done at this time inasmuch as Caughran Park with the new swimming pool was not in the city limits of Downey, but was constructed with the money from this district. Furthermore, any separation at this time would curtail the use of this new pool insofar as the citizens and schools of Downey are concerned.
