HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes-04-15-58-Regular Meeting (2)MINUTES OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY HELD APRIL 15th, 1958 The City Council of the City of Downey held an adjourned meeting in the Council Chambers of the Downey City Hall at 9:27 A.M., April 15th, 1958. There being no other duly authorized city official in office at this time, Della Doyle, City Clerk, presided. PRESENT: Councilmen: Giddings, Stamps, Temple, Peavey, Dunnum ABSENT: Councilmen: None Everyone rose and gave the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and remained standing while The Reverend J. E. Ackerman, Pastor of the Christ Lutheran Church, gave the invocation. Della Doyle, City Clerk, welcomed Judge Boone back for the second time to administer the oaths of office to the five incumbents. After administering the oaths, it was in order to elect a new mayor and vice mayor. It was moved by Councilman Temple, seconded by Councilman Peavey, and carried that Councilman Dunnum be elected mayor. Mayor Carroll M. Dunnum assumed office. It was moved by Councilman Giddings, seconded by Councilman Peavey, and carried that Councilman Temple be elected mayor pro- tempore. Mayor Dunnum thanked Judge Boone and expressed his appreciation of the interest shown by the citizens of Downey. Councilman Peavey expressed thanks in behalf of all the councilmen for the lovely floral pieces that were sent to the council, conveying best wishes and congratulations. He requested that letters of gratification be sent to the five donors: Von's Grocery, Downey Chamber of Commerce, Downey Junior Chamber of Commerce, Downey Building Materials, and the Southern California Gas Company. Mayor Dunnum's thanks -were interrupted by Larry Chaney, President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, who read and presented a letter of appreciation to the five councilmen. Mr. Leon Emerson, President of the Chamber of Commerce, extended his congratulations. Mr. John Ezzel, Downey Building Materials, extended his congratulations. Mr. W. A. Wilson, Southern California Gas Company, extended his con- gratulations. Mr. James Hall, Chairman of the Downey Board of Realtors, announced the meeting to be held at the,Rio Hondo Country Club Wednesday morning, April 16th and also extended his congratulations to the present council. Mayor Dunnum ordered a five minute recess. At the close of the five minute recess, the city council met and ,-., discussed appointments to the following committees: Citizens' Tax Committee Carl E. It was moved by Councilman Peavey, seconded by Councilman Temple, and so ordered that these committee appointees be ratified and affirmed by vote of council. Yancey (Dunnum) It was moved by Councilman Stamps, seconded by Councilman Temple, and so ordered that a rgsolution be drawn appointing Harry Sloan to fill the vacancy on the Personnel Advisory Board. No action was taken on the Planning Commission. Fire Subcommittee Fred Dodge (Dunnum) Mrs. A. V. Wills (Peavey) Dan MacKenzie (Stamps) It was moved by Councilman Peavey, seconded by Councilman Temple, and so ordered that the Fire Subcommittee be ratified and affirmed. It was moved by Councilman Peavey, seconded by Councilman Temple, and so ordered that the Rose Float Committee be ratified and affirmed. It was requested that Mr. King send letters of thanks for past ser- vices and reappointing members to the various committees; also that Mr. King contact the committees relative to the vacancies. Mr. King offered his congratulations to the members of the City Council for a job well done, and Mayor Dunnum in turn informed Mr. King that it could not have been done without the excellent administrative help they had re- ceived. Councilman Temple moved the meeting be adjourned to 7:30 P.M. Wednes- day, April 16th, 1958 in the Council Chambers. `., a o Mayor l
