HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 13-7446 - Approving Rental Credit for Use of the Downey Civic Theatre to the Downey Symphony Orchestra and Downey Rose Float Organization for Fiscal Year 2013-14RESOLUTION NO. 13-7446 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY APPROVING RENTAL CREDIT FOR THE USE OF THE DOWNEY CIVIC THEATRE TO THE DOWNEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AND THE DOWNEY ROSE FLOAT ORGANIZATION FOR FISCAL YEAR 2013-14 WHEREAS, the City of Downey has determined that the Downey Civic Theatre is a community asset, with regional appeal, that exists to promote the performing arts in Downey. ; and WHEREAS, the City desires to promote and maintain the Theatre for the public good, and WHEREAS, the demand for the use of the Theatre has grown and is anticipated to grow with the advent of emerging Downey based performing and visual art groups who have expressed interest in producing musicals, art shows, community events and other performing art oriented offerings; and, WHEREAS, the City recognizes the Downey Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1948, as a legacy organization for their promotion of symphonic music to the community through their performances at the Theatre and the Summer Concert series at Furman Park. The Downey Symphony presents three concerts at the Theatre throughout the year. As part of their contribution to promoting music and the arts, the Symphony coordinates the "Music in the Schools" program which reaches nearly 22,500 students of elementary and middle school age in the Downey Unified School District. WHEREAS, the City recognizes the Downey Rose Float Association, founded in 1955, as a legacy organization for their promotion of community engagement and youth development in their annual beauty pageant hosted at the Theatre and year round community promotion. As part of their contribution to promoting educational and female empowerment the Downey Court represented by females between the ages of 10-23 attend many civic and business functions promoting the City in addition to representing the City on the annual Rose Float entry to the Tournament of Roses Parade that provides for international recognition of Downey. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY DOES HEREBY RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1, That $10,000 in the form of a one-time Theater rental credit be granted to the Downey Symphony Orchestra to be used towards use of the Downey Civic Theater for its three (3) performances during FY2013-14. The Downey Symphony Orchestra shall submit an application and meet the criteria established by the City Council for rental credit grants. SECTION 2, That $5,000 in the form of a one-time Theater rental credit be granted to the Downey Rose Float Association to be used towards the Miss Downey Pageant during FY2013-14. The Downey Rose Float Association shall submit an application and meet the criteria established by the City Council for rental credit grants. SECTION 3, This one-time rental credit expires on June 30, 2014, unless renewed by City Council resolution. RESOLUTION NO. 13-7446 PAGE 2 SECTION 4. City Council reserves the right to repeal the Theater credit granted herein or to not renew this rental credit due to lack of funding or other forseen or unforeseen budgetary constraints .
