OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY
MAYORAL TRANSITION
JUNE 29, 1993
The City Council of the City of Downey held a Mayoral Transition Meeting
at 7:11 p.m., June 29, 1993 in the Council Chamber of the Downey City Hall,
Mayor Diane P. Boggs presiding.

Other City employees and their families were
present in the audience.
The Invocation was delivered by Dr. Michael Brazelton. The Flag Salute
was led by Robert A. Brazelton.
Mayor Boggs welcomed the audience and recognized special guests,
including former Mayor /Council Member and current Downey Municipal Court
Commissioner Roy Paul; former Mayor/Council Member Ken Miller; former Mayor /
Council Member Lye l l Swearingen, and Downey School Board Member Grace Ho rney.
Mayor Boggs delivered her final address, thanking the Council and
citizens of Downey for the opportunity to serve as Mayor for the past year,
and mentioning a few of the various ceremonies and events she has attended as
Downey's representative. She asked the citizens of Downey to wo rk together
for the betterment of the community, and looked forward to serving with the
new Mayor.
Special presentations were made to Mayor Boggs by Cerritos Mayor John
Crawly; Pico Rivera Mayor Alberto Natividad; Tom Martin representing Senator
Robert Beverly; Dr. Dick Jones representing Congressman Steven Horn; Assistant
to the City Manager June Yotsuya on behalf of the Cities of canta Fe Springs,
Norwalk, and Los Angeles County Supervisor Deanne Dana; Alicia Loncar
representing Assemblyman Epple; and Bellflower Mayor Bob Stone.
The Chair was then turned over to the City Clerk for the Election of
Mayor.
City Clerk McDonnell declared the office of Mayor open and asked for
nominations.

It was moved by Council Member Riley and seconded by Mayor Boggs to
nominate Council Member Robert S. Brazelton as IIyor of the City of Downey.
Their being no further nominations, the City Clerk declared the
nominations closed. It was unanimously carried to elect Robert S. Brazelton
as Mayor.
Mayor Brazelton declared the Office of Mayor Pro Tempore open and asked
for nominations.
It was moved by Council Member Boggs and seconded by Council Member
McCaughan to nominate Council Member Barbara J. Riley as Mayor Pro Tempore of
the City of fbw ney .
There being no further nominations, Mayor Brazelton declared the
nominations closed. It was unanimously approved to elect Council Member
Barbara J. Riley as Mayor Pro Tempore.
Mayor Brazelton complimented Council Member Boggs on her past year as
Mayor, and presented her with a Mayor plaque, City tie tack, and Certificate
of Election as Mayor.
Assistant to the City Manager June Yotsuya presented a scrapbook of last
year's accomplishments to Council Member Boggs.
Mayor Brazelton's wife, Mrs. Jean Brazelton, presented flowers to Council
Member Boggs.
Council Member Boggs presented a City necklace to Mrs. Brazelton.
Mayor Brazelton introduced his wife Jean; son Robert and wife Julie, and
granddaughter Jordan; son Michael and wife Charlotte; daughter Ann and husband
Alex, and grandson Michael ; son Kevin and wi fe Karen; son Steven; daughter
Katie; and his cousin's son, Bill Couch and wife Mary.
Mayor Brazelton discussed his new role as being an extension of his
family's ongoing volunteerism in the community. He expressed appreciation for
the fine leadership exhibited by his fellow Council Members and City Manager
Jerry Caton, and commended City staff for their dedication and cooperation
during difficult economic times. He urged communication between Downey
citizens and Council representatives, and spoke of the importance of
maintaining the community's aesthetics and full services. He explained that
sales tax revenues are vital in supporting the City Programs, and mentioned
the successful efforts recently undertaken by staff to attract and retain
Downey businesses through the use of redevelopment tools.
Cou nc i l Member Riley introduced her husband, Tracy.
Council Member Boggs introduced her husband, Bob Verd erber ; her mother,
Fern Coleman; daughter Libby and husband John, granddaughter Katie, and
grandson Mark; son Garth with wife Kathy, granddaughters Heather and
Melissa.

guidance and advice, and looked forward to a productive year with the new
Ma y or. He then introduced his wife Patti, daughters Lauren and Lindsay, sons
Michael and Mark, and father Ed McCaughan.
