A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY
ADOPTING A CLASS SPECIFICATION AND ESTABLISHING A SALARY
RANGE FOR FIREFIGHTER RECRUIT AND DESIGNATING THIS
CLASSIFICATION MISCELLEANEOUS FOR PERS RETIREMENT
PURPOSES.
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY DOES HEREBY RESOLVE
AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The class specification for Firefighter Recruit, attached hereto, and by this
reference, is hereby adopted.
SECTION 2. This classification is designated miscellaneous (non- safety) for PERS and
the salary range is established as follows:

Firefighter Recruit To be determined $3,786.52 flat rate
SECTION 3. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution and provide
for the distribution thereof.

Firefighter Recruit
City of Downey Class Specification
Adopted:
FIREFIGHTER RECRUIT
DEFINITION
Under close supervision in a training capacity, to learn to perform firefighting duties used in
the suppression of structural, aircraft, wildland and other types of fires; to participate in
training as an Emergency Medical Technician I/Fire Service; to learn to perform routine fire
prevention activities; and to learn other duties as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES
This is a trainee class. Incumbents attend a departmental academy to develop and demonstrate
the minimum qualifications required for entry into a career as a firefighter. Appointment as
a Firefighter is based on satisfactory evaluations, graduation from the academy and
management's recommendations. Trainees who are not appointed to the class of Firefighter
at the end of their academy will be subject to termination of their trainee status and /or city
employment.
Attends scheduled academy training sessions; learns proper firefighting techniques for fighting
structural, aircraft, wildland and other types of fires.
Receives instruction and participates in field training to learn proper procedures and become
proficient in emergency and rescue activities including emergency medical services,
extrication, heavy rescue, and other duties.
Learns to perform fire inspections and other fire prevention activities.
Receives Emergency Medical Technician UFire Service Instruction.
Participates in a physical fitness program.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Firefighter Recruit
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required
skills, knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the skills,
knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Completed one year full -time employment in municipal firefighting and be
currently employed as a firefighter. An AA or AS (or equivalent units) in
fire science related field may be substituted for the work experience.
Education: High school graduate or equivalent. Must have graduated from an
accredited Fire Academy. Must have current California EMT certificate.
Ability to: Learn firefighting and other emergency care knowledge, techniques and
skills through classroom lectures, discussion and field exercises. Learn to
operate fire and other emergency apparatus and equipment effectively and
safety. Ability to pass the L.A. area Fire Chiefs physical ability test within
30 days before start of employment with the City.
License Required: Valid California driver's license, Class C by date of appointment.
