HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 6534 RESOLUTION NO. 6534 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY SUPPORTING REAUTHORIZATION OF THE TEA -21 HIGHWAY AND TRANSPORTATION FUNDING BILL WHEREAS, Congress is commencing work on the reauthorization of the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA -21) as submitted by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA); WHEREAS, In its authorization of $42 billion for transit and $175 billion for highways, TEA -21 established initiatives related to flexible spending, improving the environment and focusing on a thorough planning process for making sound transportation decisions; WHEREAS, TEA -21 brought to the Los Angeles region innovative transportation programs such as: Over 1,900 new natural gas operated and non - polluting public buses, paratransit funding, the completion of 125 miles of carpool lanes and funds to initiate an Eastside Light Rail Line preliminary study and final design and many more, Metro Rail Red Line subway completion to north Hollywood, and Metro Rapid Bus Program; WHEREAS, Los Angeles County has 6.5 million people driving to work, over 1 million people ride the bus and over 150,000 people use the Metro Red Line and Metrolink rail systems on a weekday basis and over 8.8 million reside in the region; WHEREAS, Los Angeles County's population is nearly one -third of California's pp larger population which is l than 42 states. Los Angeles County is the 20 largest economy in g the world and generates more economic activity than all but eight states in the United States; WHEREAS, those statistics illuminate that the transportation needs of the region are acute and pressing; WHEREAS, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) along with other principal transportation interests have sponsored a regional list of projects for TEA -21 reauthorization funding; WHEREAS, Projects submitted by the MTA on behalf of transportation interests in the region for the TEA -21 reauthorization will help address the region's safety, security, and transportation needs in the categories of bus, rail, and highway projects; WHEREAS, We support the full inclusion of the Los Angeles County region's sponsored project list into the legislation to reauthorize the TEA -21; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that as Congress develops approval for the reauthorization of TEA -21 to ensure the Los Angeles region is part of the integrated national transportation system, and that the City of Downey affirms its commitment to the reauthorization of TEA -21 and the beneficial impacts it will have on the mobility of goods and services nationwide, in California, and throughout the Los Angeles County region; and, RESOLUTION NO. 6534 TEA -21 REAUTHORIZATION PAGE 2 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we support the list of projects submitted for TEA -21 reauthorization and request Congressional action to fully fund and implement these projects and continue the ongoing support for the transportation needs of Los Angeles region.
