HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 6461 RESOLUTION NON 6461 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY IN SUPPORT OF CONTINUED CALIFORNIA STATE FUNDING FOR PUBLIC BROADCAST STATIONS TO ASSIST IN THE CONVERSION FROM ANALOG TO DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY AS MANDATED BY THE FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION WHEREAS, in 1997 the Federal Communications Commission mandated public broadcasting stations to convert from analog to digital transmission, and WHEREAS, public broadcasting stations that do not convert to digital by May 2003 will lose their analog station licenses, and WHEREAS, the federal government did not provide any funding for the conversion, and WHEREAS, the State of California recognized the need for funding support by investing $7 million dollars in fiscal year 2001 to help public broadcasting stations defray the $100 million cost of conversion, and WHEREAS, the continued necessity for public broadcasting stations in California is highlighted by the State of California Office of Emergency Services' use of such stations to communicate with Californians during a state emergency. NOW, THEREFORE, the Downey City Council hereby urges the State of California to include additional funding in the fiscal year 2002 budget to assist public broadcasting stations to meet federal mandates to convert from analog to digital transmission by May 2003.
