HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 5840 RESOLUTION NO. 5840 RESOLUTION OF TI-IE CITY COUNCIL IN OPPOSITION TO PROPOSITION 188 - THE SMOKING & TOBACCO PRODUCTS STATEWIDE REGULATION INITIATIVE STATUTE WHEREAS, Proposition 188, the Smoking & Tobacco Products Statewide Regulation Initiative Statute has qualified for the November 8, 1994 ballot; and .-� WHEREAS, opponents contend that Proposition 188 will overturn California's current tough statewide standards limiting workplace smoking, as well as the California Indoor Clean Air Act of 1976 and all current local smoking restrictions passed in recent years; and WHEREAS, Proposition 188 will encourage smoking in public places; and WHEREAS, Proposition 188 misrepresents itself as a strong anti- smokin g measure; and WHEREAS, Proposition 188 will force non - smokers to breathe secondhand smoke nearly everywhere; and WHEREAS, Proposition 188 contains inadequate ventilation standards requiring only that q g Y the smell of tobacco smoke be removed from the air, not the cancer- causin g chemicals; and WHEREAS, Proposition 188 will do nothing to discourage children from g bu in tobacco buying and children will still be targeted by the tobacco industry's advertisement campaigns and rY victimized by exposure to second -hand smoke.
