A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY AMENDING THE
CLASS SPECIFICATION FOR FIREFIGHTER
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The class specification for Firefighter is hereby
amended as constituted in Exhibit A attached hereto and by this
reference incorporated as part of this resolution.
SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this
resolution.
APPROVED AND ADOPTED this 12th day of March, 1985.

I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing resolution was duly adopted
by the City Council of the City of Downey at a regular meeting
thereof held on the 12th day of March, 1985, by the following vote,

City of Downey Class Specification

FIREFIGHTER
DEFINITION:
To fight fires and to participate in fire prevention activites; perform
emergency duties protecting life and property; to operate and maintain
fire fighting and rescue equipment and fire stations; and to do related
work as required.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires including
rescue, entry, ventilating, overhaul, cleanup and salvage work such as
pulling working lines, holding the nozzle to direct the stream of water
on the fire, raising and lowering and climbing ladders, etc.
Assists in the maintenance and repair of fire and rescue equipment and
apparatus as well as fire station and grounds.
Responds to emergency and rescue calls and administers first aid.
Maintains and repairs fire hydrants, cleans and tests fire hoses.
Operates radio - telephone equipment.
Studies Fire Department rules and regulations, fire hazards and fire
fighting techniques and related subjects.
Operates a variety of tools and equipment related to fire suppression
and rescue activities.
Conducts fire prevention inspections and education programs as assigned.
Participates in drills, training exercises and special classes.
Inspects commercial and other properties for fire hazards and compliance
with codes and ordinances.
Prepares reports and keeps records with respect to work operations.
Responds to major alarms while off duty.
Follows established safety procedures.
May serve as a relief Fire Engineer or Fire Captain.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely
provide the required skills, knowledge and abilities would be
qualifying. A typical way to obtain the skills, knowledge and abilities
would be:
Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
Knowledge of: Basic arithmetic and mechanical relationships.
Ability to: Learn rules, regulations and operational procedures of the
Fire Department.
Learn and administer advanced first aid and CPR.
Demonstrate physical endurance, agility, strength and
stamina in the performance of hazardous tasks under
emergency conditions.
Demonstrate a high degree of mechanical aptitude.
Learn firefighting methods and techniques, the operation
of firefighting equipment, street location and physical
layout of the City, and major traffic and fire hazards.
Think and act quickly in emergencies.
Understand and follow oral and written directions promptly
and accurately.
Deal courteously and effectively with the general public.
Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with
those contacted in the course of work.
License Required: Valid California Driver's License
Necessary Special Qualification: An applicant shall be disqualified
from further employment consideration if said applicant
has smoked tobacco within one year immediately preceding
the date of the applicant's selection interview with the
Fire Chief. Upon appointment, a new employee shall sign a
statement affirming that, as a condition of continued
employment in the Downey Fire Department, he /she will
refrain from smoking tobacco.

Lateral Entry - Firefighter, Assigned as a Paramedic: An appointment
of a Firefighter, assigned as a paramedic, may be made
from a certified eligibility list provided the applicant
meets the following requirements:
A minimum of two (2) years experience as a paid full -time
firefighter in a State, county or municipal fire
department; must be a certified paramedic in Los Angeles
County or be able to obtain certification in Los Angeles
County within two (2) months of date of the applicant's
selection interview with the Fire Chief. Los Angeles
County certification will have to be maintained for a
minimum of five (5) years after date of hire unless waived
at the discretion of the Fire Chief.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Direct supervision is provided by a Fire Captain.
