A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
DOWNEY HONORING ST. MARK'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH ON
THE CELEBRATION OF ITS 60TH BIRTHDAY
WHEREAS, in 1921, a group of families who wanted to continue their episco-
pal heritage and way of worship banded together and held prayer meetings
in their own homes; and
WHEREAS, the group expanded to a point where homes were not adequate and
worship was held in a mortuary on Downey Avenue and later, a small Baptist
church on Third and Dolan was purchased and moved to a lot on Fifth Street;
and
WHEREAS, this church building on this 50 -foot lot on Fifth Street served
the Episcopal community from 1922 to 1955; and
WHEREAS, the very last service in the old church was held on Sunday, June
5, 1955 and that afternoon the parishioners reconvened and marched, with
the choir vested, from the old to the new location, hardly a mile distant;
and
WHEREAS, on Sunday, July 10, 1955, the first service was held in the barely
completed parish hall, and dedication services were held on September 25,
1955; and
WHEREAS, a Day School opened in September, 1964 and has an attendance of
over 200, is fully accredited and is recognized throughout Southern Cali-
fornia for its fine program; and
WHEREAS, on Saturday, December 12, 1981, St. Mark's will celebrate its
60th Birthday,
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY DOES HEREBY RESOLVE
AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. That this City Council extends its appreciation
and commendation to St. Mark's Episcopal Church which has grown with Downey
and has played an important part in the religious life of our city for
these 60 years;
SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of
this Resolution.
APPROVED AND ADOPTED this 8th day of December, 1981.

I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was duly adopted by the City
Council of the City of Downey at a regular meeting thereof held on the 8th
day of December, 1981, by the following vote, to wit:
