HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 3855 I I E FORl iIt + RESOLUTION NO. 3855 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY COMMENDING HENRY L. OBERNDORF FOR HIS OUTSTANDING CITIZENSHIP AND SERVICE TO HIS COMMUNITY WHEREAS, Henry Louis Oberndorf was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 14, 1901; and WHEREAS, he was educated through the Chicago Public Schools, Grades 1 through 8, and was a cadet at the Northwestern Military and Naval Academy, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin for four years, graduating in June of 1919, as Senior Cadet Captain; and WHEREAS, Henry Oberndorf, with a flair for theatrics, spent several years in show business, an accomplishment very few people in Downey know about. During World War II, he was the regular Master of Ceremonies at the Stage Door Canteen in San Francisco until the Grand Finale in 1945; and WHEREAS, Henry Oberndorf moved to Downey in 1970 and became involved with the Downey Elks in their Americanism Programs, etc.; and in -- 1974 when the movement for a Bicentennial Committee was started, he was the Elks representative for the Downey Bicentennial; and WHEREAS, Henry Oberndorf promoted and produced the 200th birthday of the American Flag at Downey High School football field, at which time he presented a book with 52,000 signatures reaffirming our Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, which was given to the President of the United States; and _ WHEREAS, Mr. Oberndorf has been honored with membership in the National Historical Society, Smithsonian Institute, and is also an advisory in research for the United States Flag Committee; and WHEREAS, Henry Oberndorf has been a member of the City's Health and Environmental Sanitation Committee, as well as serving on other committees; and WHEREAS, Mr. Oberndorf, because of his patriotism, averages 25 speeches a year on California, the United States and the Elks, as well as writing for several newspapers; NOW THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Downey does hereby resolve as follows: SECTION 1. That this City Council extends its appreciation and commendations to Henry Oberndorf for his good citizenship and service to this City and to the Country. SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution and provide for its preparation for presentation to Mr. Henry L. Oberndorf.
