HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 3591 RESOLUTION NO. 3591 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY EXTENDING ITS APPRECIATION AND COMMENDATION TO DR. MARK MEANS JOHNSON WHEREAS, Mark Means Johnson was born November 11, 1892 in a farmhouse 12 miles from Asotin, Washington; and WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson started school in Asotin, Washington in a one -room school building where he attended First and Second grades, walking or riding a plowhorse three miles to school. In 1901 the family moved to a chicken ranch near Petaluma, California, and he attended school in Third and Fourth grades there. His Fifth and Sixth grades were in a La Habra school where the family had moved to grow onions. Then they moved to Anaheim to raise ducks, and Mark attended Seventh grade there. In 1908 they moved back to Asotin where he graduated from Asotin High School in 1912; and WHEREAS, in 1912 he entered Washington State College in the Veterinary Department, graduating in 1916 with the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine; and WHEREAS, in the Spring of 1918 he entered the Army at Camp Lewis, Washington where he took his basic training. He was then sent to Camp Fremont, California and was assigned to the Mobile Veterinary section of the 8th Division. He was trained to set up field veterinary hospitals wherever the division was sent. In the Fall of 1918 he went to Camp Mills, Long Island, New York, where he was when the war ended, November 11, 1918; and WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson joined the American Legion Post of Long Beach, California and later became a charter member of the Downey Post 270 when it was organized in 1923. He was elected Post Historian of the new Post; and WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson was Chairman of the Executive Committee in the early days of the American Legion Post and he has been a continuous member of the American Legion for 60 years; NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Downey does resolve as follows: SECTION 1. That this City Council extends its appreciation and commendation to Dr. Mark M. Johnson for 60 years of continuous membership and service to the American Legion; and SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this resolution and provide for its presentation to Dr. Mark M. Johnson. APPROVED AND ADOPTED this 26th day of September, 1978. 4 WILLIAM L.
