HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 2931 RESOLUTION NO. 2931 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY ENDORSING AND SUPPORTING REASSESSMENT OF DAMAGED OR DESTROYED PROPERTY (Proposition 4) WHEREAS, the California State Constitution presently permits the Legislature to authorize local taxing agencies to provide for the assessment or reassessment; of taxable property where after the lien date for a given year such property is damaged or destroyed by a "major" misfortune or calamity and the property is "located in an area subsequently proclaimed by the Governor to be in a state of disaster "; and WHEREAS, Proposition 4 would delete the requirement for a proclamation by the Governor of a state of disaster and permit the Legislature to authorize local agencies to assess or reassess such damaged or destroyed property whether or not caused by a major misfortune or calamity; and WHEREAS, it is deemed most highly desirable that the maximum flexibility and local option be provided particularly in the case of small concentrated calamities which may not warrant an overall disaster proclamation but which are nevertheless thoroughly justified for appropriate assessment relief. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. That this City Council hereby endorses and supports the reassessment of damaged or destroyed property (Proposition 4) and calls on all Californians to cast a resounding YES vote for Proposition 4 on June 4th. SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this resolution and appropriate distribution thereof.
