HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 2871 RESOLUTION NO. 2871 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY SUPPORTING EXCLUSION OF GAMBLING WHEREAS, California State law provides for local option in the field of draw poker; and WHEREAS, most cities in this State have consistently and historically refused to permit this form of gambling within their jurisdiction; and WHEREAS, it has been noted that permitting local gambling will result in: 1. Increase in vehicular traffic. 2. Increase in strangers visiting bars. 3. Increase in workers transient in nature. 4. Increase in the professional gambler. 5. Increase in vice, narcotics, loan sharks, peddlers and prostitution. 6. Increase in traffic, patrol and detective services with an increased demand on supportive services. 7. Possibly the most important, an increase in aggrevation and strained relations between neighbors. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. That this City Council expresses its opposition to lending the sanction of government to any activity such as gambling which tends to perpetuate and aggravate the evils above cited. SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution. APPROVED AND ADOPTED this 30th day of October, 1973.
