A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY
COMMENDING NATIQNALSKATING CHAMPION KENNETH SHELLEY
WHEREAS, Kenneth Shelley and Jo Jo Starbuck, popular Downey residents,
won the national title for senior pairs for the third straight year at the
1972 United States Pairs Figure Skating Championship at the Long Beach
Sports Arena on January 16, 1972, which earned them their second trip to
the Olympics; and
WHEREAS, Kenneth Shelley won the 1972 United States Senior Men's
Championship held at the Long Beach Sports Arena on January 15, 1972; and
WHEREAS, Kenneth Shelley is the only United States Figure Skater to
win the title in two events and the first double winner in 32 years; and
WHEREAS, Kenneth Shelley will compete in the llth Winter Olympic Games
at Sapporo, Japan, during February, 1972; and
WHEREAS, Kenneth Shelley and Jo Jo Starbuck will compete in the llth
Winter Olympic Games at Sapporo, Japan, during February, 1972.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY DOES RESOLVE AS
FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. That this City Council on behalf of the citizens of Downey
extends an expression of sincere appreciation and commendation to Kenneth
Shelley as an outstanding young American and citizen of our community.
SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this
Resolution and provide for appropriate distribution thereof.

I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was duly adopted at a
regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Downey thereof held on
the 25th day of January, 1972, by the following vote, to wit:
AYES: 5 Councilmen: Jennings, Morton, Hollis, Ferris, Winton
NOES: 0 Councilmen: None
ABSENT: 0 Councilmen: None
