A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY
DESIGNATING JANUARY FIRST AS APPRECIATE AMERICA DAY
WHEREAS, the New Year's season is traditionally a time for counting
the accomplishments of the year past and looking forward with optimism
for the year to come; and
WHEREAS, the song "God Bless America" has become one of this
nation's great hymns expressing the character of this country; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate that January 1st be recognized as a day
to show appreciation for the beauty, honor and freedom in America and of
being an American; and
WHEREAS, the Association for a Strong America, Inc., Box 1132,
Stony Brook, New York, launched in May of 1970 a campaign to have the
song "God Bless America" sung immediately after Auld Lang Syne on New
Year's Eve.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY DOES RESOLVE
AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. That January 1 of 1972, and each year thereafter follow-
ing, shall be observed in this City as "Appreciate America Day ".
SECTION 2. That the song "God Bless America" be recognized as
synonymous with New Year's celebrations as is "Auld Lang Syne "; and that
each gathering in the City be asked to sing and play "God Bless America"
after "Auld Lang Syne" and the exuberance of greetings have ended at New
Year's celebrations.
SECTION 3. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this
Resolution.
APPROVED AND ADOPTED this 28th day of December, 1971.

I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was duly adopted at
a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Downey thereof held
on the 28th day of December, 1971, by the following vote, to wit: •
AYES: 4 Councilmen: Morton, Winton, Hollis, Ferris
NOES: 1 Councilmen: Jennings
ABSENT: 0 Councilmen: None
