HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 2381 RESOLUTION NO. 2381 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY ENDORSING PROPOSITION NO. 1, HEALTH SCIENCES CONSTRUCTION BOND ACT WHEREAS, the Governor and the State Legislature, recognizing the critical need in California for more health care professionals, have approved for submission to the voters on the June 2nd ballot, the $246.3 million bond issue designated Proposition 1 to be used for construction of health science training facilities at the various branches of the University of California; and WHEREAS, advances in medicine and a greater awareness by the populace of these advances have created a striking increase in the health care demands of the citizens; and WHEREAS, to merely maintain the present ratios of professional health personnel to population will require by 1980: 11,000 additional physicians, 4,000 additional dentists, 21,000 additional nurses and other professionals; and WHEREAS, the number of graduates fromnedical, dental and nursing schools in California now cannot keep up with the number who die or retire; and WHEREAS, health science manpower can be expected to develop improved treat- ments or preventives for heart disease, cancer, arthritis, emphysema and other crippling ailments; and WHEREAS, additional health specialists are needed to play a major role in solving pollution and environmental problems; and WHEREAS, the passage of this measure by the electorate of the State of California will help us to meet the health care needs of our citizens; NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. The City Council of the City of Downey endorses Proposition 1 -- the Health Sciences Construction Bond Act -- onthe June 2, 1970 ballot and urges the citizens of the State of California to vote YES on Proposition 1. SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution.
