A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY
PROVIDING FOR THE PERMANENT COMMENDATION AND RECOGNITION
OF CITIZEN CONTRIBUTORS TO THE DOWNEY VETERANS' MEMORIAL
FUND
WHEREAS, there was dedicated on Veterans' Day, November 11, 1968,at
10 :30 A.M. in the Civic Center of the City of Downey a permanent and enduring
memorial to those Veterans who gave their lives in Vietnam and to all Veterans:
Michael N. Anderson; Robert R. Bohler; Michael Cheroff; Ronald H. Chilcott;
Pablo Duran; Wayne C. Harmon; James C. Houghton; Charles R. Lauer; Durand G.
Liggett; John Lortz; Jon L. Messer; Donald M. Munden; Steven C. Patterson;
Danny E. Ward; Clifford L. Whipple; and
WHEREAS, this memorial project was undertaken with the support of the
City Council of the City of Downey; and
WHEREAS, the Downey Memorial Project was inaugurated and coordinated
through its completion by the Veterans' Memorial Committee: Mayor Thomas H.
Morton, Chairman; Earl J. Berry; Fred A. Bolte; Charles R. Brandt; Joe Davis,
Treasurer; Charles W. Dickerson; Priscilla Dunnum; Robert D. Dufek; Doral E.
Holderness; Cecil M. Jones; Major W. T. Macy, USMC; Harold A. Paulsen;
Irvin Phelan; Robert L. Porter; Catherine Reed; James E. Reed; Donald S. Riggs;
James D. Ruth; Mary E. Robertson; Chester G. Zuill; Major William H. Osgood,
USMC; and
WHEREAS, the Memorial as completed contains a sundial on the face of
which are inscribed the names of Veterans who gave their lives in Vietnam,
so arranged that every day the shadow of the sundial touches every name as
a continuing remembrance of their sacrifice; and
WHEREAS, the Program of Dedication of the Downey Veterans' Memorial
contains the following inspiring language by Henry Ward Beecher:
"Every mountain and hill shall have its treasured name,
every river shall keep some solemn title, every valley
and every lake shall cherish its honored register; and
till the mountains are worn out and the rivers forget
to flow, till the clouds are weary of replenishing springs,
and the springs forget to gush, and the rills to sing,
shall their names be kept fresh with reverent honors which
are inscribed upon the book of National Remembrance."
and
WHEREAS, the completion of the Downey Veterans' Memorial and its con-
tinued maintenance are indebted in no small measure to the voluntary con -
tributions which have been made by citizens and organizations of Downey;
and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that these contributors should be
permanently recognized; and
WHEREAS, a plaque has been prepared inscribed with the names of the
contributors and the following language:
"The City of Downey gratefully presents this commendation
to all of those who contributed to the Downey Veterans'
Memorial."
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY DOES RESOLVE
AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. That the subject plaque of commendation be permanently
located in a conspicuous place in the City Library of the City of Downey.
SECTION 2. That the City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of
this Resolution and shall cause the same to be permanently deposited in
the archives of the City of Downey.

on the 25th day of March , 1969, by the following vote:
