HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 2148 RESOLUTION NO. 2148 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY OPPOSING PROPOSITION 9, THE WATSON INITIATIVE WHEREAS, Proposition 9, commonly referred to as the Watson Initiative, will be before the voters on November 5, 1968; and WHEREAS, said proposed Initiative, if passed, will not effect a re- duction in taxes in the final analysis; and WHEREAS, if such Initiative is passed it will create a chaotic financial situation for cities and other governmental entities particularly school districts; and WHEREAS, such Initiative, if passed, will create an inequitable tax condition and will be to the benefit primarily of the large land owners; and WHEREAS, if such Initiative is passed it seriously will affect the ability of cities to provide the necessary services including sanitary and similar services and it will limit the ability of school districts to provide the services for the school children and will cause each school district to be more directly dependent upon the state for its financial life; and WHEREAS, itwllmake the local districts and political entities dependent upon the state for financial support destroys the concept of home rule. NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Downey does resolve as follows: SECTION 1. That it opposes Proposition 9, the Watson Initiative, and urges all of its citizens to vote no thereon. SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this resolution.
