HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 1536 2 351 RESOLUTION NO./5 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY OPPOSING THE ABOLITION OF COLUMBUS DAY AS A STATE HOLIDAY WHEREAS, it has been called to the attention of the City Council of the City of Downey that legislation has been advocated which will abolish Columbus Day (October 12) as a state holiday; and WHEREAS, it is the desire of many citizens of the state that such day be retained as a holiday in commemoration of Christopher Columbus; NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. That it hereby announces its opposition to any legislative action by the State of California or any administrative action at the state level which would have the effect of abolishing Columbus Day as a state wide holiday. SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this resolution and cause certified copies thereof to be sent to Assemblyman Carley Porter, G. Willson and State Senator Thomas Rees and to such other persons as it may be deemed appropriate.
