HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 5325 RESOLUTION NO. 5325 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY PROVIDING FOR PAID EMPLOYEE LEAVE FOR THE PURPOSE OF PARTICIPATION IN THE NATIONAL MARROW DONOR PROGRAM. WHEREAS, approximately 30,000 Americans a year develop leukemia or lymphoma and 7,000 leukemia patients died in 1989 because they were unable to locate a compatible bone marrow donor; and WHEREAS, the odds of locating a compatible donor are one in 20,000 and there are only 116,000 volunteer donors currently registered with the National Marrow Donor Program; and WHEREAS, of the 8,000 patients transplanted with healthy marrow since 1968 in the United States, 45 to 80 percent are long- term survivors and without a transplant the long -term survival rate is zero to 15 percent; and WHEREAS, the City of Hope has recently started a donor program where volunteers may have their blood analyzed and tested for entry into the National Marrow Donor Program; and WHEREAS, the procedure for a volunteer to donate bone marrow to be transplanted takes two to three days. NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of the City of Downey does hereby resolve as follows: Section 1. All employees who volunteer for the National Marrow Donor Program and are selected as a bone marrow donor shall be permitted to charge against their accrued benefits, the time taken off for the purpose of donating bone marrow.
