HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 1215 1 5o RESOLUTION NO, A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY OPPOSING ANNEXATION OF THE DOWNEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT TO THE COMPTON JUNIOR COLLEGE DISTRICT WHEREAS, the Downey Unified School District has taken a firm stand in the basic principle of giving the citizens of Downey a. voice in the educational opportunities for the students of Downey, through an election set for Tuesday, August 13, 1963; and WHEREAS, this election is to determine whether the Downey Unified School District should be annexed to the Compton Junior College District, which has been endeavoring to forcibly annex the Downey Unified School District; and WHEREAS, such annexation as previously attempted would deprive the citizens of Downey a voice in choosing the educational opportunities for the Junior College students of the City; NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. That the City Council of the City of Downey support the Downey Unified School District in strongly opposing this annexation to the Compton Junior College District. The City Council urges all of the citizens of the City of Downey to vote "NO" on this question a. t the election on Tuesday, August 13, 1963. The basic reason for this Resolution is that a "NO" vote will provide the citizens of Downey the chance to determine which Junior College the Downey Unified School District should join with to pro- vide the most beneficial educational opportunities for their students. It will provide sufficient time for an adequate study to be made relative to the most desirable affiliation and location for the students and the related costs involved. SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this reso- lution. APPROVED AND ADOPTED this 23rd day of July, 1963. Mayor (17:- ATTE S'P - .
