RESOLUTION NO. "
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
DOWNEY COMMENDING THE DOWNEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT,
DOWNEY PARENT - TEACHER ASSOCIATIONS, PARENT - TEACHRR
COUNCIL, PARENTS' GROUPS, AND THE DOWNEY COORDINATING
COUNCIL FOR CIRCULATING PETITIONS SO THAT DOWNEY MAY
HAVE FREE CHOICE IN SELECTING A JUNIOR COLLEGE: ALSO
URGING ALL CITIZENS IN THE SIGNING THEREOF
WHEREAS, recent action by the Compton Junior College District
has precipitated the probability of Downey's being annexed to the
Compton Junior College District, through legal action sponsored by
the State Education Code; and
WHEREAS, the Downey Unified School District, along with other
school districts in the area, have been and are continuing to study
the best and most economical solution for junior college facilities
for the people of Downey; and
WHEREAS, the Downey Coordinating Council and the Council of
Parent - Teacher Associations, supported by the Downey Unified School
District, are ardently working to obtain sufficient signatures to
restrain the present action initiated by Compton Junior College
District; and
WHEREAS, local control is of utmost importance to the citizens
of Downey in that they should have the freedom of choice relative to
the manner in which they approve a junior college program; and
WHEREAS, if sufficient signatures are obtained through the circu-
lation and signing of these petitions, the citizens of Downey may have
sufficient time to study the best alternative for their students and
the related cost thereof.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY DOES
RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. That the City of Downey does hereby commend the Downey
Unified School District, all of the Downey Parent - Teacher Associations
under the guidance of the Parent - Teacher Association Council, the Downey
Parents' Groups, and the Downey Coordinating Council and all other
organizations participating in their combined efforts in the circulation
of these petitions to obtain enough signatures so that Downey may have a
free choice in this important decision.
SECTION 2. That the City Council hereby urges all of the citizens
to assist in the circulating of these petitions and the signing thereof
at the earliest possible date for the assurance of our continued local
controls of educational affairs.
SECTION 3. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this
resolution.
