HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 0793 1252 RESOLUTION NO. 793 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY, CALIFORNIA REGARDING LEGISLATION CONCERNING THE CHELI AIR FORCE DEPOT. THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Downey favors the development of the Cheli Air Force Depot by private enterprise in keeping with the neighboring industries and businessess and believes that siad objective and the earliest development will be facilitated by a single developer; and WHEREAS, it appears that the Chanslor- Western Oil and Development Company, an affiliate of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company, donated the said property to the United States Government during the Second World War, and is now seeking the eneactment of appropriate legislation which would make pos- sible the return of said property to the said Chanslor- Western Oil and Develop- ment Company in the manner and upon the principles as set forth in the Surplus Property Act of 1944, which said Act expired in 1949; and WHEREAS, the members of the City Council are familiar with the character and nature of the industrial uses of land in the area of the Central Manu- facturing Distric,wherein said facility is located; and with the development by the said Chanslor- Western Oil and Development Company and The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company of that area formerly known as "Vail Field," which is in the vicinity of said facility and, said Council believes that a similiar development of this facility would be of great and material benefit to residents of the southeastern area of Los Angeles County, including the City of Downey, by the creation of numerous additional jobs and by the additional assessed valuation for local school tax purposes; and WHEREAS, the said Chanslor- Western Oil and Development Company and The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company have signified that they have no _ objection to a portion of the land included in said facility, consisting of approximately some 78 acres, being allocated by the Government to the Montebello Unified School District for use as a junior college; NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Downey that it favor the enactment by the Congress of the United States of appropriate legislation returning the Cheli Air Force Depot less that portion deemed nec- essary for Federal purposes to the Chanslor-Western Oil and Development Company, a subsidiary of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company, on such fair and equitable terms as are consistent with the principles of the Surplus Property Act of 1941. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk of the City of Downey City Council hereby is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Senator Thomas H. Kuckel, Senator ClairEngle, Congressman Clyde Doyle, Congressman Chet Holifield and to the apprepriate congressional committee or committees to which such legislation may be referred for consideration.
