RESOLUTION NO.
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY. COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY
APPROVING AND ENDORSING PROGRAM OF THE LOS ANGELES
MEMORIAL COLISEUM COMMISSION FOR SECURING SAID CONVEN-
TIONS WITH HEADQUARTERS IN THE NEW LOS ANGELES SPORTS
ARENA.
WHEREAS, on July 2, 1958, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission
invited the Republican and Democratic partids to conduct their 1960 Presi-
dential Nominating Conventions in the New Los Angeles Sports Arena, and di-
rected William H. Nicholas-, Coliseum Manager, to extend such invitations;
and
WHEREAS, the Los Angeles Sports Arena which will be completed in 1959
will have a seating capacity for 22,000 persons presenting a spacious con -
vention hall with adequate facilities larger than any other structure in
the United States that could be used for such purpose; and
WHEREAS, the enormous capacity of this completely air conditioned
sports arena is an important factor that makes it the most desirable place
in the nation for the major political parties to meet in 1960; and
WHEREAS, Los Angeles C ounty's wonderful climate, innumerable excellent
hotels, motels, restaurants, sports, recreation, and entertainment features
and its comprehensive network of transportation facilities connecting it
with the rest of the nation cannot be equaled by any other area; and
WHEREAS, the State of California with its 14 million population will
play a dominant role in the 1960 national elections, by reason of its rank
as the second most populous state in the Union and because several of its
native sons are nationally regarded for their Accomplishments in public
affairs and highly renowned for their statesmanship and leadership abilities;
and
WHEREAS, politically Los Angeles County stands as the pivotal point of
0"1% the State of California as 4i7of the State's registered voters reside here:
NOW, THEREFORE, THE :CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DOWNEY DOES RESOLVE AS
FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. That the invitation of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum
Commission to invite the Republican and Democratic Parties to schedule their
1960 political conventions in the Los Angeles Sports Arena is enthusiasti-
cally and strongly endorsed; and
SECTION 2. That the City Council of the City of Downey does further
resolve to extend this invitation in behalf of all the citizens of Downey
and urges the national and state leaders of both political parties to avail
themselves of the manifold advantages offered by the new Los Angeles Sports
Arena for such conventions; and
SECTION 3. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this
resolution and cause a certified copy thereof to be forwarded to the
following designated national and state leaders of both political parties,
as evidence of the desire of Los Angeles County to host these significant
events that play so vital a role in our American democracy:

sixty -one cities in the'County, also to every Chamber of Commerce in Los
Angeles County.
