AGENDA MEMO
DATE:
October 11, 2011
TO:
Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council
FROM:
Council Member Mario A. Guerra
SUBJECT:NAMING OF INDEPENDENCE SKATE PARK IN HONOR OF FORMER
MAYOR AND COUNCILMEMBER MEREDITH H. PERKINS
RECOMMENDATION
I recommend that Independence Skate Park be named “Meredith H. Perkins Skate Park” in
honor of former Mayor/Council Member Meredith H. Perkins, who served the City from 1998
to 2006. Former Mayor/Council Member Perkins was instrumental in working with City staff to
bring the skate park facility to the City and in selecting Independence Park as the best
location for such a venue.
Staff should also be directed to create a proper plaque to honor Mr. Perkins and, once
created, the plaque can be installed at the Skate Park and dedicated during a proper
ceremony.
DISCUSSION
The City Council adopted a policy for naming City Facilities (copy attached) which
established the following criteria:
1. Significant Length of Service
2. Love of Community
3. Impeccable Character
4. Positive Impact on Community
5. Politically Retired
Former Mayor/Council Member Meredith H. Perkins meets the criteria adopted and
Independence Skate Park would be an appropriate facility to honor his service to the City.
FISCAL IMPACT
There is no immediate general fund cost. There will be some expense to prepare proper
signage and the cost of the plaque honoring former Mayor Perkins.
