AGENDA MEMO
DATE:
October 11, 2011
TO:
MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL
FROM:
OFFICE OF THE CITY MANAGER
By: Rick Esteves, Chief of Police
SUBJECT: UNSCHEDULED PURCHASE REQUEST FOR BODY-WORN
CAMERAS
RECOMMENDATION
That the City Council appropriate $23,380 from the Asset Forfeiture Funds to purchase
20 body-worn cameras for use by the Police Department.
DISCUSSION
The Police Department’s patrol vehicles are currently equipped with In-Car Video
Systems, which are a proven tool in providing the best possible evidence to accurately
document incidents.
Our police motorcycle does not have the capability of being equipped with a video system;
therefore, our motor officers do not have the ability to video record their traffic stops or any
incident in which they may be involved. The body-worn camera is easily attachable to the
police uniform shirt and records both the audio and video of an incident. The camera
system will be invaluable from a liability and complaint reduction standpoint.
FISCALIMPACT
There is no financial impact to the General Fund. The cameras would be purchased from
the Asset Forfeiture Fund.
