AGENDA MEMO

TO:
Mayor and Members of the City Council
FROM:
Office of the City Manager
By: Shannon DeLong, Assistant to the City Manager
SUBJECT: City Events to Involve Outlying Downey Neighborhoods
RECOMMENDATION
That the City Council approve of the hosting of three City events and appropriate $5,000
for supplies and materials.
BACKGROUND
Three areas of Downey, because they are physically divided from the City by major
transportation corridors, tend to feel more isolated and less involved in civic matters
than most of the Downey community. As part of his mayoral year, Mayor Marquez
pledged to focus on the 17,500 residents in these areas and requested that City events
be planned to involve these residents.
DISCUSSION
The three areas of focus are east of the I-605 freeway, north of the I-5 freeway, and
south of the I-105 freeway. In the late summer and early fall, three City events would be
hosted at parks immediately adjacent to each of these neighborhoods. The events
would provide an opportunity for residents to meet Council members, learn about City
resources, and provide input on neighborhood concerns and would be held at
Wilderness Park (August), at Golden Park (September) and at Dennis the Menace Park
(October). To encourage attendance, the two-hour events would include a barbeque
and a recreation activity for children.
In addition to planning and publicity, the following City departments and organizations
would provide logistical support for the events:
- Fire and Police Departments, including Neighborhood Preservation
- Keep Downey Beautiful volunteers
- Community Services and Public Works staff
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The cost for the three events, not including staff time, is estimated at $5,000.
