Community Wall of Fame AGENDA MEMO DATE: July 12, 2011 TO: Mayor and Members of the City Council FROM: Office of the City Manager By: Thad Phillips, Community Services Director SUBJECT:APPROVE REQUIREMENTS FOR CANDIDATES TO THE COMMUNITY WALL OF FAME AND LOCATION OF THE WALL OF FAME RECOMMENDATION That the City Council approve requirements for candidates to the Community Wall of Fame and location of the wall of fame. DISCUSSION Council Member Guerra requested staff to look into developing a Wall of Fame and staff developed a list of requirements. Requirements for Candidates to the Community Wall of Fame 1. Nominees must be unanimously selected by the City Council Wall of Fame sub- committee and Downey City Council. City Council members may submit their nominations directly to the City Council for consideration. 2. Current elected officials are not eligible for consideration. 3. Spokesperson to present nominee’s qualifications (a 3-5 minute presentation) to the City’s Wall of Fame sub-committee and if selected to the City of Downey City Council. 4. Nominations would be submitted between September – January, sub-committee would review between January – February, and the annual recognition and installation would occur during May – June. 5. Applicants will be asked to submit a 5” x 7” photo of the candidate for the Wall of Fame for a photo archive to be maintained by the City. Staff evaluated various sites and after review, recommend an area outside the entrance to the city hall. An existing wall that follows the contour of the main Council Chambers’ exterior wall will be utilized. (Attached is a mockup of the proposed Wall of Fame) FISCAL IMPACT The cost of modifying the existing wall to accommodate memorial plaques and reconfiguring the hardscaping and landscaping in the general area of the “Wall of Fame” is estimated at $12,000.
