Show Mobile DUSD AGENDA MEMO DATE: April 26, 2011 TO: Mayor and Members of the City Council FROM: Office of the City Manager By: Shannon DeLong, Assistant to the City Manager SUBJECT: DOWNEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT USE OF SHOW MOBILE RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the City Council approve the use of the show mobile by the th Downey Unified School District for the Relay for Life community event on June 4 and th 5 to be held at Columbus High School. BACKGROUND The Downey Unified School District sponsors the annual American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event at Columbus High School. Relay for Life is a very special community event that honors cancer survivors and families that have lost loved ones to cancer. Downey residents who walk to raise awareness and money to support survivors, families, and friends affected by cancer attend the 24-hour event. Communities across the nation hold similar events to raise awareness and fundraise for the American Cancer Society. These annual events raise millions of dollars to help find a cure and battle the disease of cancer. Downey’s event begins Saturday, June 4 and ends Sunday, June 5, 2011. DISCUSSION The City received a letter from the District requesting the use of the show mobile for the Relay for Life. The show mobile is available and can be loaned to the District under the current Use Agreement between the City and District. The request is for the stage to be delivered to Columbus on Friday, June 5. However, the stage set-up requires that it be disassembled Sunday evening (it cannot be left open and unattended overnight Sunday night), which will incur overtime labor costs. FINANCIAL IMPACT Labor costs for the delivery of the show mobile during regular business hours on Friday, June 5 and the disassembly and pickup on Sunday evening are $729.04. The standard equipment rental rate is $242.68, bringing the total fiscal impact to $971.72. Attachment: Request letter from Downey Unified School District CITY OF DOWNEY, CALIFORNIA
