FUNDS FOR THE PUBLIC LIBRARY STAFF EDUCATION PROGRAM
(PLSEP)
RECOMMENDATION
The City Council accept and appropriate $5,000 from the federal Library Services and
Technology Act (LSTA) grant entitled Public Library Staff Education Program (PLSEP).
DISCUSSION
The California State Library has developed a program to address the formal library
education needs of California public library staff seeking a Master’s degree in Library
and Information Science. The program is intended to assist public library staff who are
working to secure a library degree by supplying federal LSTA grant funds for tuition
reimbursement.
The City Librarian worked with part time Library Assistant, Vanessa Lucero, to apply for
this competitive grant. The grant would reimburse her for tuition costs up to $5,000 for
the Summer 2010, Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 sessions through the San Jose State
University program. Ms. Lucero will be eligible to apply for this grant again next year.
She plans to complete the Master’s degree program in December 2013.
FISCAL IMPACT
The $5,000 grant provides for tuition reimbursement. No city funds are required.
