AGENDA MEMO
DATE:
May 11, 2010
TO:
Mayor and Members of the City Council
FROM:
Office of the City Manager
By: Mark Sauter, Deputy City Manager
SUBJECT: 2010 July Fourth Celebration
RECOMMENDATION
th
That the City Council authorize a July 4 Fireworks show utilizing donated funding.
BACKGROUND
In March of 2010, City staff recommended the City Council dismiss the consideration of
a publicly funded Fourth of July celebration. The basis of the City staff recommendation
was the current financial condition of the City. The City Council agreed general funds
should not be used for the 2010 July Fourth celebration. However, the City Council
directed City staff to seek private donations for the event and to report back to the City
Council.
DISCUSSION
Staff followed the City Council direction and solicited private funding pledges for the
event. Research was completed for a site for the potential event. Preliminary planning
was done as well. To date, staff has confirmed pledges of $31,000. Staff is
recommending the City Council consider hosting a 2010 July Fourth Fireworks show
that does not use general fund revenues. The actual details and activities of the event,
if supported by City Council action, will be forthcoming as donations continue to be
collected.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
Recommendation is for event to be funded by donations. With no City financial
sponsorship, there will be no financial impact on the general fund.
