SUBJECT: EMERGENCY FOOD SUPPLIES FOR CITY DISASTER
SERVICE WORKERS
RECOMMENDATION
That the City Council authorize the purchase of emergency food supplies for City
disaster service workers’ use during disaster operations, and appropriate funds in an
amount not-to-exceed $13,000 from the General Fund.
BACKGROUND
In the event of a natural disaster, it will be necessary to have personnel at City facilities
on a round-the-clock basis. Since staff will be providing disaster relief services at the
City around the clock, the City needs to have emergency food supplies available for
them. Staff has researched several emergency food products and made a selection
based on price, shelf life, ease of use and taste. The Red Cross and FEMA recommend
City staff be prepared with a three (3) day supply of emergency food and water.
DISCUSSION
Staff is recommending a purchase of emergency meals for all personnel that will be
providing service during a disaster. The cases of meals will be stored in cool/dark
places at various City facilities. Water for staff will be donated by Coca-Cola. Staff will
develop a plan for the food and water supplies to ensure they are replaced as needed.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
Los Angeles County Department of Public Health grant funds will be used for this
purchase. The fiscal impact for this project will be $13,000, which will be appropriated
from the General Fund.
